After more than eleven years in data engineering, across telecom, retail and healthcare, Gaurav Barde came to BlueCloud looking for the chance to run a project end to end, from the business problem through to delivery. He found it, and more: the room to build, the trust to make significant technical calls himself, and a clear path toward becoming a Solution Architect, as part of BlueCloud’s India team.
In this conversation, we asked Gaurav about why he chose BlueCloud, the achievements and projects that have defined his career here, the opportunities he's gained as part of the India team and what his experience as part of the India team has looked like, from taking on business-critical work to learning directly from the people who built the Snowflake platform.
You'd already spent more than a decade in data engineering before joining BlueCloud. What made you decide to come here?
There were two reasons, one strategic and one personal. On the strategic side, I'd watched how closely BlueCloud worked with Snowflake, one of the fastest-growing platforms in the industry, and I wanted to build on it rather than read about it from the sidelines.
On the personal side, it came down to a conversation with Nilesh Tantarpale. The expectation he set was different from anywhere else I'd worked: understand the business, take ownership, and deliver outcomes. That conversation moved me from a technical role into a techno-functional one, and it changed the direction of my career.
How has your role changed since joining BlueCloud?
The biggest change has been moving beyond thinking only as a data engineer.
The shift came from one project. I led a large-scale migration for a global automotive parts distributor, moving billions of records from a legacy IBM AS400 system to Snowflake. Since there wasn't a dedicated business analyst, I worked closely with stakeholders, translated business needs into technical solutions, and helped drive key architectural decisions across the implementation, from the architecture to choosing the right dbt approach.
That project changed how I measure my own work. I stopped focusing only on the technical implementation and started thinking about the business outcome it was meant to produce. Solution architecture stopped being a future goal and became the natural next step in my career.
What's something you've built at BlueCloud that you're especially proud of?
I'd have to say Snow Migrate 360, an accelerator. During the automotive migration, we found that Snowflake's own SnowConvert tool could migrate the SQL inside a shell script, but not the script itself. So we built an accelerator that automates the full migration, which is what lets a company move off a legacy system on schedule instead of rewriting thousands of scripts by hand.
What's it like being part of the India team, day to day?
There's no gatekeeping. If you need help, people at BlueCloud make time to share what they know, even when their own plate is full.
That extends to how we handle outcomes, too. When a project lands well, the team celebrates together, and when something goes wrong, we work through it together instead of leaving one person to carry it. That's what made BlueCloud feel like a second family from the start, and years in, that hasn't changed.
You've worked across Data Vault, Power BI, Azure Databricks and Azure Data Factory. So, why Snowflake?
I actually left Snowflake for a Databricks project at one point, then came back. Databricks handled transformation well, but performance and cost became a real constraint once clients scaled their usage. Snowflake handles both the transformation and the analytical side well, and even its smallest warehouses hold up at scale. Combined with how fast Snowflake is moving on AI, that's what keeps bringing me back.
What opportunities have opened up for you as part of the BlueCloud team?
What opens doors here is initiative and a willingness to keep learning. I've worked directly with Snowflake, dbt and Fivetran teams on tooling decisions for the automotive migration, sat in on Snowflake's own product conversations, and built relationships with customers well beyond my assigned project.
The Snowflake World Tour in Bengaluru is a good example. I met the broader Snowflake community, discussed architecture with the people building the platform, and came away with a sharper read on where the technology is headed.
How does BlueCloud inspire you to keep growing?
What stands out is that learning happens naturally as part of the work. I've kept building certifications, but most of my growth has come from being handed responsibilities that pushed me to think differently, and from being included in conversations beyond my assigned scope.
Tell us about the most meaningful moment you've experienced at BlueCloud.
One project that always comes to mind was a Hadoop-to-Snowflake migration for a large healthcare provider in the U.S. When we finished, both the client and the Snowflake team sent a note thanking us for the work we had done. It was the first recognition I received at BlueCloud, and I still keep it as a reminder of what the work means to the people on the other end of it.
What does the next chapter of your career look like?
Being part of BlueCloud changed the way I approach new projects. Instead of asking whether I already know how to do something, I ask what I can learn from it. That's the mindset behind where I want to go next: Solution Architect, then a data and AI subject matter expert on Snowflake. If Snowflake Data Superhero status comes with it, that would be a milestone worth having.
What would you tell someone considering a career at BlueCloud?
My advice is simple: Think less about the company name and more about where you'll actually be trusted to make decisions and grow. At BlueCloud, you own your work end to end, and that ownership is what accelerates how fast you learn and how much of the bigger picture you understand. Looking back, that's probably been the single biggest driver of my own growth.
And one thing your colleagues might know about you that clients probably don't?
I hum before calls start. Energy has to go somewhere.
